To achieve a satisfactory result in step bending, some calculations are required that depend on knowledge of several key parameters related to the bending process, including:
- Arc length – the distance between the ends of the bent curve of the sheet measured on the inner side of the bend;
- Number of bends – the number of individual bends required to achieve the specified radius; the more bends, the smaller each bending angle, resulting in a smoother curve;
- Distance between bends – the spacing between individual bends made during the process.
Although the step bending process may seem complex, CORMAK machines and software are advanced enough to automate many operations previously requiring manual calculations.

Follow-up servo supports allow bending of large sheets by automatically lifting the material during the bending process to maintain the correct angle and prevent deformation.
