What is sandblasting – process and applications

Sandblasting is a mechanical surface cleaning process: an abrasive stream (e.g. corundum, steel shot, glass beads, walnut shells) propelled under high pressure or in an air stream removes rust, old paint coatings, oxidised layers, deposits and contaminants. After sandblasting, the surface becomes rough, improving the adhesion of new coatings such as paints, lacquers or anti-corrosion layers.

Depending on the material type, surface condition and desired result, it is advisable to have various sandblasting tools – from simple siphon guns, through cabinets, to large central installations.

Main types of machines and equipment

Below are the key types of sandblasting machines and their characteristics:

  • Cabinet sandblasters – fully enclosed chambers in which the operator performs sandblasting externally using gloves and a viewing window. The cabinets prevent dust from escaping and ensure a safe working environment.

  • Siphon sandblasters – operating on the principle of drawing abrasive by air suction and transporting it in an air stream. Their design reduces abrasive consumption and allows the use of different abrasive materials.

  • Cabinet washers – used for cleaning components with a stream of medium (e.g. water or wet abrasive) and chemical additives; ideal where sandblasting would be too aggressive or when drying and further treatment are required.

  • Sandblaster equipment and accessories – essential for the correct operation of sandblasting machines for metal and other materials: guns, nozzles, dust extractors, gloves, viewing windows, filters, separators and abrasive recycling systems.

Sandblasting machines for metal

A special group includes sandblasting machines for metal – objects such as steel, aluminium or cast iron – whose surfaces are exposed to corrosion, oxidation, paint coatings or other contaminants. To be effective, a metal sandblasting machine must meet the following requirements:

  1. Durability – a design resistant to abrasion, overload and vibration,

  2. Operator safety – sealed cabinet, good lighting, clear view without blind spots, protective gloves, dust extraction and filtration,

  3. Pressure and abrasive control – different materials require specific abrasives and pressure levels to avoid damaging the metal surface,

  4. Ease of use and maintenance – quick replacement of wear parts and access to accessories.

Sandblasting machines are used in many industries:

  • automotive industry – renovation of rims, frames, engine components, car bodies, suspension parts;

  • construction industry – cleaning of steel structures, trusses, pipes, welded assemblies;

  • aerospace and marine industries – very high requirements for surface preparation and corrosion resistance;

  • crafts and restoration – antiques, decorative elements, metal furniture, artistic metalwork.
