How does a sheet metal roller work?

The rolling process involves passing the material through a series of rotating rolls, discs, rollers, or flat tools that shape it through plastic deformation. This technique can be applied at different temperatures: hot rolling for higher plasticity and cold rolling for greater precision of finish. Depending on the selected model, unloading of the workpieces may be automatic or manual. Automated machines can operate continuously, thereby increasing production efficiency.

During rolling, the metal not only changes shape (usually by elongation and reduction of cross-section) but also its internal structure. Structural modifications directly affect the mechanical and physicochemical properties of the metal, which is crucial for subsequent processing and the final application of products.

Types of rolling

The rolls used in a sheet metal roller can vary in shape, arrangement, and direction of rotation. What are the most common types of rolling?

  • Longitudinal rolling – involves rolling the material by placing it between two rolls rotating in opposite directions. It enables the production of various products such as sheets, strips, bars, and profiles. Longitudinal rolling is mainly used to produce components with uniform, continuous shapes and dimensions.

  • Transverse rolling – involves processing the material by rotating and compressing it between rolls moving in the same direction. This method is effective in manufacturing parts such as bolts, screws, or gears.

  • Skew rolling – uses a set of rolls rotating in the same direction with inclined axes. It enables the production of parts such as tubular sleeves or balls.

  • Periodic rolling – the material is moved forward (or reciprocally) through rolls rotating in opposite directions with parallel axes. It is used in the production of items such as sleeves, preforms, ornaments, or other decorative products.

  • Special rolling – combines various methods, allowing the manufacture of components with unusual or more complex shapes.
