What is a press brake? Types and applications

A commonly used machine in industrial plants is the press brake. What is it? And how do machines of this type work? Press brakes are used for precise sheet metal processing. They make it possible to bend sheets in a specific way in order to obtain a selected shape. In today’s article, we explain how press brakes work and what types of these machines can be found on the market.

What is a press brake and what is its application?

A press brake is an advanced device used for precise bending of sheet metal. It works on the principle of pressure exerted by the bending beam with a punch on the material placed on the die. A key element of the process is the precise setting of the bending angle, which makes it possible to obtain the desired geometry. Press brakes are widely used in industry, in particular in the production of e.g. machine elements, housings, electrical cabinets and automotive parts. Their use makes it possible to achieve high precision and repeatability, which is crucial in serial production. Thanks to modern technologies, press brakes are equipped with CNC control systems that enable automation and optimisation of the bending process.

What are the types of press brakes?

Press brakes can be divided into three main types, depending on the drive used.

  • Hydraulic presses base their operation on hydraulic systems, which make it possible to precisely control the working speed of the beam. Machines of this type are versatile and very accurate, capable of bending materials of various thicknesses.
  • Electric presses operate based on an electric motor that drives the bending beam. They offer high bending accuracy, ensure quiet operation and are ideal for complex projects. They are also appreciated for low energy consumption.
  • Hybrid presses combine hydraulic and electric technologies, combining the advantages of both systems. They offer both high pressing force, as well as high precision and energy efficiency.

Which press brake will work best in specific industrial applications? Each of the above-mentioned types of presses has its unique advantages. The final choice of machine should be made after a detailed analysis of specific production requirements, the available budget and the planned production scale. For example, a hydraulic CNC press brake will be the best choice in the case of bending thick and hard materials, requiring high pressing force.

Regardless of the type of press brake we want to invest in, it is important that the machine meets two significant criteria:

  • it should have advanced control systems enabling adjustment of operating parameters to production requirements,
  • it should be made of high-quality components, which guarantees long machine life and reduces the risk of failure, even in the case of intensive use.

Press brakes – summary

Press brakes play a major role in industry, enabling precise sheet metal processing and adjustment of its shape to specific requirements. The choice of the appropriate type of machine should be based on a detailed analysis of production needs. In every case, it is important that the machine ensures high efficiency and operational stability and enables efficient, precise processing. For this reason, it is worth choosing industrial machines from proven manufacturers who place the quality of their products first.
